During kraft pulping, approximately 90 % of the lignin in the wood is dissolved and makes a complex mixture of breakdown products with wide molecular mass distribution. Kraft lignin can be recovered from black liquor by lowering the pH. When the pH is lowered, the lignin is precipitated and can be removed from the solution by filtration. Kraft lignin can tereafter be used as raw material for chemicals.
