OPTI-Kappa
On-line measurement technology for the digesters and bleach plants has been a research field of high activities for Innventia. The lignin content (kappa number) of pulp has been considere an important parameter both for system control and to characterise pulp properties.

Early research efforts at Innventia resulted in the first industrially approved system for on-line kappa number measurements. It was based on a patented optical technology. Its commercial success was based on a thorough understanding of, and a solid theory for, the interaction between light and fibres in a flowing suspension.

In related measurement systems  other properties have been characterized: fibre size, species, dissolved lignin, fines content and the dewatering capability of the pulp.

The commercial rights to the Opti-Kappa were transferred to ABB in 1995. ABB in its turn sold the rights to BTG in 2002, where it was introduced as the KNA-5002 Kappa-Trac.
