The quality of a final product is starting to be defined already in the forest. Good information about the raw material and its fibres provide better prerequisites for optimal control of the raw material and subsequent production processes.
Hundreds of tonnes of fibres arrive at a typical mill every day. The fibres may
have different origins; local soft-woods or hardwoods, imported wood from various regions or saw mill chips. Obtaining statistically relevant knowledge of the incoming fibres from a papermakers point of view is a demanding task.
Any property variations will affect the process as well as the quality of a final product. However, proper knowledge about these variations, could be used to “peak” the quality of a product for different categories of customers.
Innventia has developed a concept for automatically characterising pulp logs at the mill gate. A truck load is analysed as it is being measured. The sampler is movable and well suited for specific wood supply analyses with potential for
- Efficient wood utilization.
- Improved process control
- New methods for payments, based on the real value of the fibres in the final product.
