There is a great need for knowing the quality of the chips throughout the production chain, purchased saw mill chips and locally produced chips alike. In several Innventia research projects a fast on-line measurement system, as well as many sampling solutions, were developed.

 

An automatic sampler retrieves about 1 m³ chips per hour. The chips are distributed onto the measurement belt where they are characterized using fast image analysis. In the 80s, this technology was the basis for many measurement and control oriented projects. A portable unit was used at various mills in projects that served to increase the basic knowledge of the wood room processes and their contribution to the quality of the end product. All in all 8 systems were installed for most applications.
