New wood-based material for gas barrier films

- developed by STFI-Packforsk, KTH and Södra Cell

A new  wood-based material to be used in the production of gas barrier films has been invented by researchers at STFI-Packforsk, KTH and Södra Cell.
A successful collaboration within the biorefinery research team has resulted in an international patent application covering the use of a wood hydrolysate as a raw material for barrier films. The material is extracted from wood chips prior to the pulping process by means of elevated temperature and further processed by ultra filtration. It can be used for producing "green" barrier films suitable for packaging applications where oxygen exposure is critical.
