FEX – a complete pilot plant
The FEX system is a complete pilot-scale papermaking facility serving the pulp and paper industry with its suppliers with process studies, product development and evaluation of new technology and raw materials.

The most well-known technical tool is the FEX paper machine, which gave the entire pilot system its name. FEX has been updated regularly since the start-up in June 1982. A major improvement in the stock preparation system will be one of goals of an upgrade project in 2008 and 2009. This is made possible by a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

A complete paper technology centre

The FEX system is more than an advanced paper machine. The pilot plant includes other important resources at pilot scale: a TMP refiner, a fractionation and screening system, a system for low consistency refining and StratEx, a semi-pilot sheet former. LINDA, a pilot scale machine designed to study and convert moving paper webs.

Advanced expertise and project focus

The team working at the FEX pilot facility is composed by more than 30 people who are qualified in pulp and paper technology, mechanical construction, innovative measurement techniques, advanced paper chemistry and management of research and development projects.

Indeed, the FEX organization is extremely project oriented to be able to handle development and innovation projects in close cooperation with the industry.
