Our competence covers the whole R&D field from organic chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to process development, material sciences and system analyses.
The Biorefinery research explores possibilities to valorise bark substances, hemicellulose and lignin into value-added chemicals. The whole chain from raw materials (black liquor, forest residues) to final products is covered. Production of motor fuels (methanol, Fischer-Tropsch diesel) from black liquor via gasification is also studied.
Focus
Innventia biorefinery activities focuse on three chemical intermediates from large by-product streams:
- Lignin from black liquor (production of motor fuels (methanol, Fischer-Tropsch diesel) from black liquor via gasification is also studied)
- Hemicelluloses from forest residues, saw dust, black liquor and TMP/CTMP waters
- Suberin and extractives from bark
Two new processes developed within the KAM and FRAM programmes are important building blocks in Innventia biorefinery concept:
- Isolation of lignin and hemicelluloses from black liquor through acid precipitation and ultrafiltration
- Leaching of wood chips and forest residues for separation of metal ions and organic substances
