Our new blog on papermaking – one of the most exciting fields for the future!

Cellulose-based society by Innventia

Imagine a world where clothing can change colour and design. Or where packaging tells you before the food inside expires. These might seem like glimpses of a utopian future, but they could actually become a reality within the next 20 years. There are currently all manner of exciting developments going on within papermaking. Both the industry and the world around us face dramatic changes – an evolution towards a bioeconomy in which more and more materials can be replaced with forest products. Read all the latest news here on our new papermaking blog!

Think ahead – that’s one of Innventia’s mottoes. But we also want to think new and think together. Of course, this is particularly important when facing major changes, as is currently the case.

Paper has been part of our everyday lives for centuries. It has mostly been used for printing, tissues and packaging, but also for many other uses. The past 20 years have seen a drop in demand for printing and writing paper, but there has been an increase within other types of paper and pulp production. Packaging, labels and lining are just a few examples of growth areas.

We know that the climate question is one of the most important challenges of our time. At the same time, the world around us is changing in many ways. A new group is emerging: the global middle class. More and more people are moving to the cities, and are increasingly well educated with greater spending power. They are also increasingly aware of sustainability and recycling. The products they use need to be safe and meet tough new requirements. The packaging that protects food can be of the utmost importance when it comes to both making everyday life easier and avoiding waste.

We are also seeing greater digitalisation – leading to even more thoughts in connection with the role of industry, as well as questions about raw materials and energy.

So what are we doing about this? We are already investing significant research resources in efforts to replace fossil materials with renewable alternatives. And we have made considerable progress. Products such as the clothing and the packaging alluded to above could soon become a reality, as could more revolutionary products.

Everything that is currently made from oil can be made using forest materials! Take carbon fibre, for example – a strong, lightweight material. It can be used to make strong, lightweight cars that also use less fuel. Ordinary wood contains lignin, which can be used to produce sustainable packaging that is also biodegradable. We already make textiles from cellulose, one of the building blocks of wood fibres.

But did you know that cellulose is stronger than steel and can even be made to conduct electricity? We could build houses filled with solar cells where the walls regulate the temperature and the curtains collect sunlight and light up as darkness falls… The possibilities are endless – and are becoming a reality.

As a society, we need to work together in these areas across industry boundaries. We need to ensure that we have knowledge for the future, and we need to prepare for different scenarios.

We are launching this papermaking blog as part of this effort. There are so many exciting new things happening within the industry right now that we simply have to share them.

Here on our blog, we’ll tell you about the latest news, studies and results. We’ll also discuss our latest Global Outlook report: Papermaking Towards the Future. And of course, we’ll introduce some of the people involved – researchers and other key individuals who are dedicated to meeting the challenges of the future with their ideas and actions.

Join us as we create the future of papermaking. Let us tell you what’s on our minds. And don’t hesitate to tell us what’s on yours. We’re all ears!
