The sixth FTP conference 2009 was held at the Clarion Hotel Stockholm, with approximately 260 participants from 23 countries. More than half of the participants were representatives of companies and industry organisations and slightly fewer than half were research scientists from universities and research institutes. The objective of the theme, “From Research to business,” was to demonstrate the possibilities that exist to achieve successful innovations and increased business opportunities through research. The Swedish Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, Eskil Erlandsson, and the Chairman of SE-banken, Marcus Wallenberg, opened the conference by highlighting the forest industry’s importance for sustainable social development and the importance of research policies that generate excellent and relevant research. This was followed by about 30 presentations by research scientists and industry representatives within the framework of four sessions: innovative products, manufacturing processes, access to biomass and sustainability in a social perspective.

In addition to the conference itself, several side events took place, including a Researchers’ Forum, a modern type of poster session with nearly 30 five-minute presentations from research scientists. The format, with sufficient breaks, provided those present with excellent opportunities for networking and making new contacts.

The conference was executed by the Swedish Forest Industries Association in collaboration with process leaders for the four value chains in the NRA (National strategic Research Agenda for the Swedish forest sector), forest, wood, pulp and paper, and bio-energy.
